Licence Conditions and Responsibilities
Your Obligations as a Licensed Operator
You Must:
- Identify with your callsign at the start, end, and every 10 minutes
- Use the minimum power necessary
- Operate within your authorised frequency bands
- Use commercially manufactured equipment (at Foundation level)
- Not exceed 10 watts PEP
- Comply with EMR (electromagnetic radiation) safety requirements
- Allow ACMA to inspect your station if requested
Third-Party Traffic
You can let a non-licensed person speak on your radio, but:
- You must be present and in control of the station
- You must identify with YOUR callsign
- Messages must be personal or emergency-related — no business
International Contacts
You can talk to amateurs in other countries! Some things to know:
- Use the phonetic alphabet for clarity
- Third-party messages to some countries may not be permitted
- If operating overseas, check the local regulations
Interference
If your transmissions cause interference to other services or your neighbours' electronics:
- You are expected to cooperate in resolving the problem
- Check your own station first — make sure you're not generating spurious emissions
- ACMA can investigate interference complaints
The golden rule: Use the minimum power necessary, identify properly, stay within your allocations, and be courteous. Amateur radio is a self-regulating community — your reputation matters.
